Bella’s Footprints

Every week in Australia, approximately 20 children are rushed to emergency departments due to suspected button battery ingestion . These small, coin-sized batteries, commonly found in household items like toys, remote controls, and musical greeting cards, can cause severe internal injuries if swallowed. When lodged in a child’s oesophagus, a button battery can react with saliva, generating an electrical current that leads to chemical burns and tissue damage within hours.

Tragically, since 2013, three Australian children have died from complications related to button battery ingestion . One of these was 14-month-old Isabella Rees, who passed away in 2015 after unknowingly swallowing a button battery. Her mother, Allison Rees, channeled her grief into action by founding Bella’s Footprints, a charity dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of button batteries and advocating for stronger safety regulations.

Bella’s Footprints has been instrumental in promoting public education campaigns, including the launch of Australia’s first International Button Battery Awareness Day on June 12, 2023 . The organization works tirelessly to inform parents, caregivers, medical professionals, and retailers about the risks associated with button batteries and the importance of secure battery compartments and clear product labeling.

As a family owned and run business, we proudly support Bella’s Footprints in their mission. We believe that through increased awareness, improved product safety standards, and community engagement, we can prevent further tragedies and ensure a safer environment for our children.
